Smith Choral Society is one of the most renowned choral groups in the United States. Founded in 1867, the group has a legacy of over 150 years of exceptional vocal music performance. The group primarily consists of undergraduate and graduate students of the Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and has gained recognition through its extensive tours, recordings, and collaborations with other major music organizations.

History

Smith Choral Society was founded in 1867 by the first music professor at Smith College, Elizabeth Storrs Mead. The first performance of the group was held on the steps of College Hall, which was attended by the then-president of Smith College, L. Clark Seelye, and other distinguished guests. Over the years, the group has gained recognition for its excellence in vocal music, performing major works in the choral repertoire by composers such as Bach, Mozart, and Handel. In 1993, the group won the Massachusetts American Choral Directors Association's Collegiate Treble Choir competition.

Performances

Smith Choral Society performs a variety of music genres ranging from medieval chant to contemporary compositions. The group performs regularly every semester, including major performances such as the Christmas Vespers and the Commencement Concert. The group also takes part in intercollegiate music festivals and competitions, including the Five College Choral Festival, where members of the Smith Choral Society join with other vocal groups from the other four colleges in the area for a major performance. Additionally, the group has toured nationally and internationally, including a tour of Spain in 2007.

Membership

Smith Choral Society is open to all undergraduate and graduate students of Smith College who are committed to the group's mission and willing to follow the rigorous performance schedule. Members who remain with the group for four years are awarded a choral gown, designed to celebrate the tradition and legacy of the group. The group is conducted by a faculty director, who oversees the group's rehearsals and performances.

Collaborations

Smith Choral Society has collaborated with many renowned music organizations and conductors over the years. In 2018, the group performed Handel's Messiah, alongside the Boston Baroque Orchestra and Chorus, under the direction of Martin Pearlman. Additionally, the group has also collaborated with composer Ola Gjeilo, commissioning and premiering his composition called "The Lake Isle." The group has also collaborated with the Five College Early Music Program, the Smith College Orchestra, and various other groups within the Smith College Music Department.

Conclusion

Smith Choral Society's legacy of excellence in music, commitment to vocal performance, and dedication to its mission has been reflected in the group's more than 150 years of music-making. The group's contribution to the choral repertoire and its collaborations with renowned music organizations and composers have cemented its place in the national and international music community. The Smith Choral Society remains a vital part of the Smith College music department, representing the college with distinction and affirming the power of music and the arts in higher education.
